St. Pete Sermon – July 5, 2020

June 11, 2020

Dear Our Savior Family,

It goes without saying these past three months have been unlike any other that we have experienced. Even though there has been great uncertainty in many aspects of life, we know the promises of our resurrected Savior are certain and true! Strength, guidance, peace and hope are found in the power and promises of God’s Word:

God Takes Your Hand to Comfort Your Fears and Help You
“I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God… For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, ‘Do not fear; I will help you’” (Isaiah 41:9-10, 13).

Be Still to Take Refuge in God in Trouble
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea… He makes wars cease… He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’ The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress” (Psalm 46:1-2, 9-11).

Rest in the Lord’s Beauty and Strength to be Safe
“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? … Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident. One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling” (Psalm 27:1, 3-5).

Over these past few months, Our Savior Lutheran Church and School was committed to helping meet the emotional, physical and spiritual needs of our members and community. Some of the many aspects of our ministry include:

Sunday Morning Live Stream Worship (10 am on Facebook) is reaching thousands of people. The Gospel message is being shared across the United States and in Europe.

Sunday Evening Community Prayer (8 pm on Facebook) is giving opportunity for everyone to virtually gather for a time of prayer and fellowship.

Monday Morning Bible Study (10 am) meets via Zoom.

Tuesday Evening Bible Study (7 pm on Facebook) – We are currently studying 1 John.

Wednesday Drive-In Communion Service (St. Pete 6 pm, East Bay 7:30 pm) provides a unique opportunity for members to receive the sacrament of Christ’s true body and the true blood for the forgiveness of sins and the strengthening of their faith. We also celebrated First Communion with our fourth-grade students during one of these services.

Living Love To Go provides groceries and hot meals every Thursday afternoon to families in need. If you or someone you know is in need, please contact the church office. We can help!

Youth Ministries – meet online via Zoom and other social media outlets.

School Ministry –continues with summer camp. During the final semester of the academic year, teachers and staff were in daily contact with students and families through online classes, counseling, devotions and prayer.

Although it looked a little different, God opened new opportunities and the ministry of Our Savior has grown and is alive and well. We continue to move forward and make a significant impact in our world and community for the Kingdom of God.

Great things have taken place and new, exciting opportunities are emerging in our society and ministry. But the truth stands: we are better together and we are created for community.

It is with great pleasure we announce Our Savior Sunday Morning In-Person Worship will resume on June 21st with the following schedule:

Our Savior St. Pete: 8 am Traditional Service and 10 am Modern Service

Our Savior East Bay: 10 am Modern Service

For all worship services and ministry events:
• We encourage worshippers to wear masks (though they are not required)
• Please be considerate of others and maintain social distancing when greeting each other and when sitting in the pews and chairs.
• Pre-packaged Communion will be distributed at the entrance and will be celebrated in your seats.
• Offering will be collected as we enter/exit the sanctuary
• Hand sanitizer and anti-bacterial wipes will be readily available
• Nursery will remain closed for the time being
• Kids Church will not be held for the time being

We are emphasizing Personal Responsibility and Personal choice. If you do yet not feel comfortable attending worship in person, be assured —

(including Wednesday evening communion service)

As we resume our Sunday services, we are faced with a complex array of issues and challenges. We also realize there are a variety of opinions, views, and levels of personal comfort regarding how to handle this situation. God’s word states, “let us love one another, for love comes from God” (1 John 4:7). The “love” is agape love which means we love unconditionally, without expecting anything in return. We love sacrificially.

In such a precarious and polarizing environment, it is imperative we move forward in unity. Please be personally aware and strive to be considerate, humble, and exercise patience, love, and compassion for your fellow worshippers.

Thank you for Living Love, for your prayers, support and patience. Please continue to remember the ministry in your prayers and offering. We rely on your generosity to keep the ministry moving forward and need your help.
